Here we will try to help you in determining what your VoIP server requirements may be. Before we go on though, if you are not familiar with the technology, begin by refering to Figure 1. This is the simplest configuration and not recommended for any but the smallest businesses without plans for expansion.
Next, look at Figure 2. This is a moderate size VoIP installation which shares the internet connection with the VoIP traffic, but can handle more simultaneous calls and does not suffer from the jitter and echo problems as seen in Figure 1's design. As an added bonus, this design permits users to connect to the business network using secure (VPN) connections as well. So a traveling employee could connect to the corporate database as well as use the VoIP connection for outside calling.
Finally refer to Figure 3. Here we dedicate a T1 PRI to voice and we can handle up to 23 simultaneous calls. We could choose either an additional T1 DATA circuit for internet connections or use a lower bandwidth connection such as DSL. Of particular note here, we do not show a business server farm or an internet connection (data) as it would be implemented in a manner to those shown in Figures 1 and 2.
By no means is this the only way to build a VoIP / Data network, but it does provide some insight as to how one could implement various sized solutions.
